Short Experimental
From a mere technical point of view the tv/video screen comes alive by a controlled beam of electrons in the cathode ray tube. For 'Energie!' an uncontrolled high voltage discharge of approx. 30.000 volts exposes photographic paper which is then arranged in time to create new visual systems of electron organization. Even though the result is abstract it tells a universal story older than the world itself.
Global Landscape
When dreams of Latvian independence turn into a nightmare as families struggle for any quality of life under a new market economy, a migrant worker pays an agency to find him a job anywhere in Europe. The agency relocates him to Belfast where he struggles to get his young family settled. This personal insight into sacrifice and patience deems love as the only pursuit. Screened with This Belfast Thing .
Finale
Join us for the 2008 San Joaquin Film Festival Finale - Awards Gala, an extraordinary evening: honoring the exemplary talents of featured filmmakers of this year's inaugural, global film festival - awarding with jury-selected and audience-selected winners: and ending on a high note with "Love & Dance," an intriguing, narrative feature by Israeli filmmaker Etan Anner.
Finale
Celebrate the Finale of San Joaquin Valley's premier celebration of cinema with a pre-reception, featuring "Miracle Mile Flavors," a collection of food from restaurants of Stockton's Miracle Mile district - and mingle with this year's Award recipients.
Short Narrative
Freefall is a psychological snapshot of a Manhattan businessman suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome. During a casual lunch break in the park, a sensory trigger – the sound of a low-flying plane – forces him to relive the events of 9/11.
American Indie Cinema
A mechanic at his father's garage during the late 1970s, Matt dreams about leaving his small town existence and pursuing grander ambitions. But strong feelings for a new girlfriend and deep family ties may prevent Matt's ultimate escape, despite pressure from best friend Schultz to take off immediately. Coming-of-age story in a small town. Winner of 32 awards worldwide. In Person: Carl Thibault.
Short Narrative
Ros Sereysothea (Actress Sophea Pel) was Cambodia's most beloved female rock singer until Pol Pot's nightmarish regime took over the country in 1975. Her enchanting voice, once used to entertain, was now her only chance of survival. Winner of Best Short Film at Cambofest. In Person: Greg Cahill and Sophea Pel.
